Overview

In 2019, Spye General Engineering implemented a bank stabilization and habitat enhancement project for two homeowners on Miller Creek in Marin County after the stream bank behind their homes had failed during a previous winter. Following plans designed by Geomorph Design, Steve Pye and his crew opened a 500’ access road to gain equipment access to the site prior to bringing in 80 tons of rip rap, erosion control materials, and a dewatering system to divert stream flows around the worksite. As part of the project, several pieces of large woody debris were anchored to the riprap wall to provide fish habitat as well. Willow pole cuttings were installed during rock placement to provide cover and shade for the stream, and a native planting installation on the newly protected bank above the rock was installed to provide additional habitat and protection against erosion. lastly, the temporary access road to the site was decommissioned using rice straw and native grass seed to prevent erosion allow the riparian corridor to recover the road.
